How to avoid turbo compressor failure: 5 essential tips

Good morning,

I am Enzo, an experienced TurboMotor technician, and today I'm going to talk to you about a very important topic to keep your vehicle in tip-top shape: how to prevent turbo compressor failure.

Below you will find the 5 essential tips for keeping your turbo in top condition.

1. Checking the Engine Oil Level

One of the key factors in preventing damage to the turbo compressor is the engine oil level. Make sure the level is between the minimum and maximum allowed. This is very important if you drive a car with a diesel particulate filter (FAP) and travel short distances. Exceeding the maximum level could indicate the presence of unburned diesel, diluting the oil and potentially damaging both the turbo and the engine.

2. Regular Maintenance

Keeping your vehicle in top condition is crucial for the health of the turbo. Make sure you stick to the recommended service interval, which is usually 15-20,000 kilometres. Regular service can help detect potential problems before they become serious.

3. Particle Filter (FAP)

If you have a vehicle with FAP, keep an eye on the accumulation of particulate matter in the filter. Unfortunately, checking the level of accumulation requires a diagnostic tester. Driving short distances can increase the risk of particulate accumulation, so try to make longer trips to activate the FAP's self-healing. This will help keep your turbocharger healthy.

4. Avoid Overheating and Overspeeding

Avoid over-revving and overheating the engine. These problems can result from too much oil or remapping the ECU to increase boost pressure. Both can put a strain on your turbocharger.

5. Oil Specifications

Finally, use a high-quality engine oil that meets the specifications required by your vehicle manufacturer. Low-quality oil or oil that does not meet the specifications can adversely affect the health of your turbocharger.

In the next articles we will discuss what can happen to your turbo if you do not pay attention to these aspects and what is involved in replacing the turbo compressor.
