Gearbox stuck? Causes and checks for manual and automatic cars
A gearbox can seem “stuck” in several ways: the selector will not leave Park, a gear will not engage, or an automatic transmission stays in one gear. Each points to a different diagnostic path.
Selector stuck in Park
Check the conditions in the vehicle handbook, including the brake pedal and electrical supply. A brake signal, shift interlock or selector fault may be involved. Do not force the lever.
Automatic transmission will not shift
The cause may involve control electronics, hydraulic operation or mechanical parts. A workshop should read fault codes, inspect for leaks and check the oil level and condition where the manufacturer provides a procedure. Transmission oil checks differ by model; adding fluid without the correct specification and process can cause further problems.
Manual gear will not engage
The linkage, clutch and internal gearbox components may need assessment. Tell the technician whether the problem occurs with the engine on or off and whether it affects one gear or all gears.
What to do
- Stop safely if the car cannot change gears properly or shows a transmission warning.
- Record the vehicle model, year, gearbox type, messages and exact symptoms.
- Ask for a diagnosis before ordering a replacement gearbox.
- If replacement is needed, verify the transmission code and vehicle compatibility.
